The Wallace Monument is built on Abbey Craig, high above the the River Forth, and is thought to be the site of William Wallace's Headquarters for the Battle of Stirling Bridge. |
The monument is signposted all over Stirling and is easy to find. There is a large free car park at the foot of Abbey Craig. From here it is a steep walk up the hill or, if you want to conserve your strength for climbing the monument, there is a mini bus service which runs up and down the hill. |
There isn't a lift to the top of the monument, just a steep narrow spiral staircase with narrow slit windows through which the wind howls. If you suffer from claustrophobia at all don't visit the monument at peak tourist season - being stuck on the stairs with crowds of people would not be recommended. Luckily there are three large rooms to rest in on the climb up the monument. |
The climb to the top of the monument is worth it!. You are rewarded for your effort with panoramic views over Stirling and the River Forth. |
